Responsible Unit: Corporate Administration of Social Responsibility of the Institutional Relationship Department (GRES/DERIN)
CORREIOS increases its collaboration for the sustainable development of the planet while approving of the CORREIOS Environmental Administration System (SGAC). Its main goal is to reach a correct environmental performance, by means of the administration of the significant business environmental impacts and the continuous search for processes, services and products offered by CORREIOS.
The next step, which involves the whole company, is the construction of the Corporate Environmental Action Plan – which prioritizes the objectives and environmental goals that will be implanted. We show some initiatives that integrate the SGAC and that are already consolidated at CORREIOS.
The administration of solid residues is a requirement of the National Policy of Solid Residues (Law 12,305/2010) and of the Decree 5,940/06. With a history of more than ten years practicing the sorted waste collection and for four years practicing the solidarity sorted waste collection, CORREIOS outstands in the federal public administration for its experience. See the main actions implanted in this action front:
Solidarity Sorted Waste Collection – Action that promotes the separation of dumped recyclable residues (paper, glass, plastic, metal, and organic) and their destination to the association/cooperatives of recyclable materials collectors. The program generates reduction of environmental impact and social inclusion (income to the families in situation of social vulnerability)
Adequate Dumping of Special Residues – Action that promotes the environmentally adequate destination of the solid residues as shown:
– Health service residues;
– Fluorescent lamps dumping;
– Lubricant oil and vehicle batteries.
EcoPostal - Action that reuses, primarily, the uniforms, bags and postal mailbags without conditions of internal use, by means of the donation of these materials, which were once incinerated, to non-profit entities, that transform them into handcraft parts and commercialize them. EcoPostal generates reduction of environmental impact and social inclusion (income to families in situation of social vulnerability).
Greenhouse Effect Gases
Concerned about the health of the population, with the life quality of the planet and with the climatic changes, CORREIOS conducts the following actions to mitigate and/or compensate the emission of CO2 generated by the company in the implementation of its administrative and operational activities:
Environmental Nursery – A nursery was created in 2010, in the Regional Directorate in Rio de Janeiro – RD/RJ, capable of producing up to 10,000 seedlings per year, to be distributed to the units of CORREIOS all over the country according to the requests and to the capacity of production of the nursery.
Tree planting / ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGE – In the past years, the employees of CORREIOS have planted trees, voluntarily, in various localities of the country. These initiatives inspired the creation of the “Environmental Challenge” Project – action launched in the opening of the “2010 CORREIOS Santa Claus” Campaign as a way to give them as gifts to the Brazilian society and the CORREIOS employees who have been supporting the Christmas campaign. The main objective is to mitigate the environmental impacts caused by the vehicle fleet. A total of 110,000 seedlings will be planted by 2012 by all of the CORREIOS regional directorates. This number represents the totality of employees at CORREIOS and the scope of the plantation includes the whole national territory, demonstrating the human force and the capillarity of CORREIOS.
Electric Vehicles for Large Pavements – They are pieces of equipment moved by rechargeable batteries, with charge capacity of 300 kg, used for delivery and collection of orders in the large pavements of the central area of Curitiba/PR.
Electric Vehicle – A pioneer test of electric car use was conducted at CORREIOS, fruit of the partnership with CPFL (Paulista Company of Power and Light). The objective of the initiative was to identify advantages and disadvantages of the use of vehicles powered by electric energy and the environmental impact generated by the transportation sector in general. The test was conducted in Campinas-SP.
Renewable Natural Resources
Another CORREIOS Environmental Administration System (SGAC) front is the incentive to the conscious consumption of the renewable natural resources.
Environmental Education – Events directed to the sensitization and/or the execution of environmental practices that aim to the reduction of the consumption, primarily, of water, electric energy, and paper. In addition to the events, internal campaigns, issuing of environmental stamps and institutional thematic sponsorships complement the strategy of culture change in favor of the environment.
Ecoefficient Products and Services – Philatelic products with ecoefficient characteristics are commercialized. An example is the executive notebooks and the packages made in recycled paper.
